Kiva Organic Cacao Powder (Cocoa - Chocolate Powder) Review

When we were kids, my grandmother used to make this super delicious chocolate milk when we come over to her house during vacation. We often wondered why her chocolate milk tasted better as compared to the store-bought, packaged chocolate milk powder we usually drink. When my sister saw the Kiva Organic Cacao Powder, she told me that our grandmother used to use cacao (of course a different brand) to make chocolate milk (I didn't know that! How on earth did she know?!) for us. So, she instantly whisked the cacao powder from me and continued on to make grandmother's chocolate milk.

I was watching her make it and she told me that this would also be great for chocolate fudge, cupcakes and frosting. Wow! Who knew cacao would be so versatile right?! :)

I took the chance to take a picture of the Kiva Cacao Powder and it's a fine, smooth powder which smells really delicious. I tasted a bit of the powder (I couldn't help it since it smells so nice) and it tasted a bit like bitter chocolate minus the sweetness.

Here is a short history of cacao and a little something about Kiva Cacao Powder. :)

Cacao Powder: Cacao has been consumed by the Mayan and Aztec cultures for centuries due to its invigorating health properties. Cacao contains one of the richest sources of antioxidants found in nature and is a great source of magnesium, dietary fiber, iron, zinc, and potassium.

Kiva cacao powder is made from only the finest hand-selected premium Criollo cacao beans from Ecuador. Our low-temperature, minimal processing protects the cacaos natural nutrients and flavor. The result is a delicious powder that is just as nature intended, with no sugars or fillers.

Okay so I asked her how she did this and here's what she told me:

1. Heat the milk.
2. Put the cacao powder (about 1/4 cup in this ratio).
3. Put sugar to add a bit of sweetness (she used a flavored creamer to add sweetness to our cacao drink)

Now all of these she did without measuring anything. I mean, I also do follow my instincts when cooking and I also don't measure ingredients to the recipes I know but she's a way better cook than I am. :) She finished making this in less than 5 minutes.

And to finish it off, I put an ice cube on my drink to make it into an iced drink. :) I tasted it and it tasted just like my grandmother's cacao milk. :) It has this smooth, chocolate-y, yummy taste which is very different from store-bought (powder or liquid) ready to drink chocolate milk. It brought back memories from my childhood. Even my daughters, who are 3 and 5, said this is delicious.

I can't wait to try the Kiva Organic Cacao Powder the next time we make cupcakes, frosting and chocolate fudge. :)

  1. Really a good food item. Cacao is full of protein, medicinal mushroom, chocolate flavor. Anyone can take it and I think they will love it to take next time.
